MY TRENDS 2021

An period tracker app designed to educate and empower tweens

Tweens going through puberty need age appropriate support to understand their menstrual cycles and changing bodies, yet there is no app designed specifically to help them. Most apps further exclude them by putting educational resources behind paywalls or using gendered language. MyTrends sets out to give all young teenagers a sense of control during a tumultuous time by providing an educational and customizable period tracker. MyTrends uses a multidimensional calendar that both tracks and defines the different changes that occur during the menstrual cycle.

Visual Research and Experimentation

process pics_edited.png

Before developing my own calendar system, I conducted research on the history of calendar design. I learned that prior to the industrial revolution, most calendars were radial. Round calendars allowed for one common graphic to be applicable to multiple years and time systems, where as the typical calendar we all know today becomes obsolete after a specific month of a specific year has passed. For example, the famous mayan calendar had both a long count for days since the birth of their civilization and a ritual calendar that operated 260 day cycles. For the sake of experimentation, I also designed a preliminary radial and linear calendar and tracked my own body metrics.
